AFRICAN AMERICAN CIVIL WAR CONFERENCE IN KINSTON
Spring 2005 Symposium
of The United States Colored Troops Institute, March 4 – 6,
2005
Kinston, NC --- In the
spirit of North Carolina’s recognition
the 140 th anniversary of the “Campaign of the Carolinas”,
many African American Civil War enthusiasts will converge upon
Kinston, the site of the March, 1865 Battle of Wyse Fork, to
attend "Earning the Right to Citizenship," a regional
symposium of the United States Colored Troops Institute (USCTI),
on March 4-6, 2005 at the Hampton Inn, Kinston, NC. The Symposium
will feature presentations and docudramas from national and
regional historians, civil war scholars and history buffs revolving
around the participatory role of African Americans in the Civil
War, the symposium is co-sponsored by the Black Heritage Society,
creator of the Cultural Heritage Museum (CHM), an economic
catalyst for heritage tourism development in Eastern North
Carolina and USCTI.
On Friday from 6 to 8:30
pm, a reception will be held at the Cultural Heritage Museum,
242 S. Queen Street in Kinston to honor Black Civil War Heroes
from North Carolina. Beginning at 8:30 am on Saturday at
the Hampton Inn, the conference will feature two seminar
tracks focusing on history and heritage tourism that will
feature Symposium leader Dr. Stanton Biddle, President of
USCTI; Dr. Frank Smith, Founder of the African American Civil
War Memorial in Washington, DC; Dr. David A. Anderson aka
Sankofa, storyteller and Chairman of the Rochester New York
Freedom Trail Commission; Civil War Re-enactors from the
54h Massachusetts Regiment and Battery “B”,
USC Light Artillery; descendants of Civil War soldiers, Juanita
Moss, Edwin Jones, Elizabeth Sessoms and others. Saturday evening
a true “Down East Carolina Feast” will be held
for the attendees at Carraway’s Restaurant. On Sunday
morning a wreath will be laid at the Wyse Fork Civil War Battlefield
to commemorate the fallen members of the US Colored Troops
that fought in that memorable Civil War Battle in March , 1865.
Registration fees are $35 in advance, $45 at door, and $20

About the USCTI: The United States Colored
Troops Institute for Local History and Family Research at Hartwick
College is an educational institute to promote and encourage
research, preservation, and remembrance about the United States
Colored Troops, inclusive of men of African descent, Native
Americans, and their white officers. In addition, the Institute
is devoted to placing the USCT within the historical realm
of the Underground Railroad Freedom Trail.
The Institute encourages communities
of America to “find” their
local USCT members and to place the soldiers and their families
within a local historical context through educational and commemorative
events.
About the Cultural Heritage Museum: The CHM
is a heritage tourism project of the Black Heritage Society,
Inc. in Kinston, NC. The CHM will pay tribute to the more than
250,000 Black soldiers and their 7,000 white officers who fought
with the Union in the American Civil War, with emphasis on
the 9,000 US Colored Troops from North Carolina; it will pay
tribute to Black Military veterans from the area; Carl Long
and the Negro League Baseball Players; local heroes, Africa
and Black history in general.
